Age Friendly Cities and Communities

The Age Friendly Foundation is helping to further popularize and expand the World Health Organization (WHO) Global Network of Age Friendly Cities and Communities.  As of 2019, more than 700 communities have been designated by the WHO as Age Friendly.

In developing this program, the WHO sought to establish a global coalition committed to making the world age friendly, one community at a time.  By educating policy makers, supporting and promoting evidence-based health and social policies, and fostering knowledge transfer between communities, the WHO is working toward a world better able to adapt to its aging population.

DESIGNATION OF AGE FRIENDLY CITIES AND COMMUNITIES

The WHO has focused on 8 sectors of a community’s infrastructure that it has determined most directly impact the needs of older people.  Described by the WHO as “the built environment, transport, housing, social participation, respect and social inclusion, civic participation and employment, communication, and community support and health services,” these areas provide a roadmap of how communities can adapt to better serve the aging population.  And as part of the process of becoming designated as a member of the WHO Global Network of Age Friendly Cities and Communities, communities commit to creating and following action plans that will improve access, opportunity and engagement for older people.

RECOGNITION

As a member of the WHO Global Network of Age Friendly Cities and Communities, communities are recognized on the WHO’s site Age Friendly World. Their efforts are publicized and promoted through local organizations, events, campaigns, coverage in the press, and on websites addressing aging topics such as Age Friendly Advisor (agefriendly.com).

Promotion of age friendly communities

The Age Friendly Foundation has partnered with Age Friendly Advisor to further promote age friendly communities. The Foundation manages the grey highlighted community section on each Age Friendly Advisor city or town page, and works with cities and towns to promote their age friendly initiatives. To begin the process of claiming your community’s page on Age Friendly Advisor, email support@agefriendlyfoundation.com. Both the approval process and text are administered and managed by the Age Friendly Foundation. Both the approval process and text are administered and managed by the Age Friendly Foundation.
